Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Kabul
Recovery for Afghanistan has been a struggle. Before the war
with the United States, they were engaged in a civil war, which came following a war with the Soviet Union in the 1980s, so there has been little time for the country to find relief. War has many effects on a region, including economic, cultural, political, and social disruption.
Since the war began in 2001, 16,725-19,013 civilians have been
killed as a result of murder, disease, malnutrition, lack of adequate health care and more. In 2004, the life expectancy of a citizen of Afghanistan was 42 years old, and 25% of children did not make it to the age of 5.
The economy of a nation is its foundation, and without a stable
economy, it is nearly impossible to return to a functioning society. Afghanistan had plans to confront their economic problems, but so many years of conflict have withered their economic structure.
War also ruins a nation’s culture, especially when they’re
fighting a foreign force. Even though efforts have been made to
retain lost cultural heritage, most Afghan cultural monuments have been destroyed.
The education system in Afghanistan has also experienced the
harmful effects of war. Schools have been torched and as of 2010, around 6,000 schools are on plain grounds with no buildings and in most villages no schools are being built for girls. In many parts of the country, schools have closed
down and children are completely deprived of education.
The government in Afghanistan before the war on terror, the Taliban, was one of the contributing factors of the war. Since then, the government has made improvement from the Taliban with Hamid Karzai as president of a democratic form of government. Even so, there is still corruption in the nation’s government, with the disappearance of millions
of dollars of government funds and members of the Afghan military, allies of the US military, killing American and European troops.
